Smitten

I was staying across the street from Balboa Park. My son had visited the Zoo many times while stationed in San Diego. He and his friends went there to get away from the stress of their work. "The Zoo is amazing", he told me time and again. The military discount was attractive until the magic of the Zoo took over. He would never have forgiven me if I hadn't made the effort to get there. Balboa Park is huge so it wasn't within walking distance of my friends house, but I found it easily. There are many signs. From the moment I parked the car, until the moment I left the San Diego Zoo, I was smitten. I got there late in the morning and I had quite a walk to the main entrance. The parking lot markers were colorful and fun. The flowers were spectacular. All this just a preview of what was to come.

Planning Your Zoo Trip

The San Diego Zoo is divided into zones. Looking at the map of the zoo on line,is a good planning tool so you get the most out of your visit. The web site will get you excited about your visit as well as a sense for what there is to see and do. Kids will love the web site which is very kid friendly. Now that you have your plan lets go.

Allen's Swamp Monkey

Monkeys In Cages.

The Monkey cage near the entrance is fascinating. There is a huge troupe of monkeys. On this bright sunny day the monkeys were active and just monkeying around having fun. They are such social animals they chatter, swing and are just wonderful to watch. The Zoo aims to educate visitors about the animals. I learned about the difference between old world monkeys and new world monkeys. You can also discover why they call Allens Swamp monkeys, Allens Swamp monkeys.

When Your Feet Get Tired

When your feet get tired the perfect place to be is the Sea Lion show. The Sea Lions do tricks and interact with their trainer. Learn all about these charming beasts and why they make such good performers. There are several shows throughout the day.

The End Of The Day

A day at the San Diego Zoo is amazing. After marveling at the diversity of animals, learning about where they live and watching the people you will want to go back. No matter how much you see on your trip to the Zoo there is always something more.

The San Diego Zoo is definitely a treasure, and a must-see for those visiting Sunny So. Cal. Its "sister park," the San Diego Wild Animal Park, is equally worthy of a visit. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Nice photos and I'm glad you included the topiary. I visited San Diego Zoo in 1988 and thought it was amazing - it was very hot I remember and we kept sneaking into the shops to coll down, I ended up with quite a few souvenirs :o), I also visited the Wild Animal Park (also amazing) and Seaworld (better than the Florida one I thought).
